In Oaxaca, there is always something going on. The following events are the most important moments of the year in town. For those events we recommend you to book in advance your accommodation.

During this week passion and death of god are commemorated. Many representations are organized to invoke supernatural powers and each person ask for actions of grace to make better their daily life.

 

Many parade are organized and this event is celebrated also with the breaking of “cascarones”, colored egg shells filled with confetti over family and friends.

You can also see this on the Zócalo of Oaxaca and everybody can participate.

July 20th to july 31th

 

 

Guelaguetza is one of the most important event of the year in Oaxaca. It means a lot to Oaxaca habitants. During 10 days many processions of the 7 regional delegations are organized in the city center.

 

The Zapotec word Guelaguetza means “offering” and was originally used to describe a ceremony held each year in order to propitiate the gods in return for sufficient rain and a bountiful harvest.

 

But since 1521 date of Spanish arrival the original signification have been changed to the celebration of the Virgen Carmen at the

“Cerro el Fortín”.

 

The first two Mondays after July 16th, Oaxacan folk dance takes place in the big open-air Auditorio Guelaguetza.

In the last few years many other events have grown up around the Guelaguetza like many concerts, craft and food stalls but also a Mezcal fair...

July 14th to july 24th

 

This year, Oaxaca celebrates the 12 Mezcal fair which takes place in the “Parque Juárez” (El llano).

During 8 days all the mezcal producers of the area will make you taste their spirit made from the agave plant against around 10 pesos fee at the entrance of the park.

 

This event have been created to reinforce and promote the mezcal industry.

September 15th & 16th

 

In the morning of September 16th 1810, Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, priest of the town of Dolores (Guanajuato State) invited his parishioners to take weapons against the Spanish government.

 

After many battles Hidalgo and his leaders were captured and executed in 1811 but the fight continued with José María Morelos y Pavón.

Mexico was finally declared independent in 1821 by the Spanish viceroy.

 

On this date, everybody meet on the Zócalo and celebrate together the most important day for any Mexican. The plaza is crowded and you can assist to fireworks, concerts...

In 2008, Oaxaca celebrates the fourteenth food of the god festival.

 

A week dedicated to celebrate and explore the cuisines of Oaxaca.

 

This is definitely the place to experience authentic pre-Hispanic flavors.

November 1st and 2nd

 

The two days of the Dead festival are very important in Mexico. One of the biggest celebration among the religious calendar.

 

It is the time of the year for all Mexican families to go the cemetery to decorate the graves of their loved ones with flowers, candles and even food. They share the favorite dishes of the dead members of their family all together.

 

Mexican people are not scared about death, they laugh about it, play with it and even live with it.

December 23th

 

The night of the radishes is a famous and uniquely event of Christmas season in Oaxaca. It is the celebration of the end of the harvests so farmers and artisants make sculptures from radishes.

 

On the night of December 23rd, the Zócalo of Oaxaca becomes a huge exhibition of all the figures which can be very big and representing many scenes.
